The Oneness of Being

Over thousands of years spiritual traditions have been expounding the theory of oneness.  The oneness of union with our creator, who for me is, God.  A number of years ago when I first started to meditate I thought that the silence within would be the only place where I could find this experience of oneness.  But the most profound moments of that connection to the sacredness of the universe came in very minuscule flashes, which, as soon as I realised where I was disappeared. Of course, this left me wanting more of those moments and since then I have found that those moments of complete love, joy and connectedness are always with me only most of the time they are not what I had expected them to be.  I believe we all have some sort picture in our minds of a serene being sitting in the lotus position, high in the mountains, chanting AUM and meditating, thus being one with all that is, and this is the only way this exalted state can be achieved.   But this is not the reality in this modern world. We can have this oneness as we go about our daily lives.

I am a Star Trek fan. The first series started in the 1960’s. (You may not be aware of it, but it is said, Gene Roddenbury the creator of Star Trek channelled the material for this programme from a group of highly evolved spiritual beings called the Council of Nine). In Star Trek there is a species called the Borg which integrated other species into a hive mind so they lose their individuality and become one acting the same as all the Borg.  In one of the programmes the Borg were doing their thing and I began to feel extremely scared.  I could not think where it was coming from, so after the programme I sat and meditated on this feeling.  I realised what I was feeling was fear at not being me.  So who was me, who was this self?  Was I my name, a sister to my brother, a daughter, a healer, a teacher, a mother, a wife etc.  No, of course not these were the roles I was playing, these were what society was looking at and seeing as me.  I located my fear which made me ask the questions, “Where would my individual self go and, would I cease to exist if I merged in  oneness with God?”  In my thinking I knew the answers to my questions, but until you actually feel it you do not have the experience.  A grain of sand on its own does not make a beach, a drop of water an ocean, one flower a garden.   When we, as a single entity, are joined together in unity with others it makes a whole picture and even though there is still individuality, it is the oneness of creation which makes us all the same.

Quantum Physics has proven that we are made from the same substance as the stars, we have a scientific community presenting us with theory after theory telling us we are all connected through energy. So what is the best way for us to connect to each other and to drop the energy boundaries we have placed around ourselves?  These energy boundaries are fear based and it is only when we let go of this fear based existence and live from love that we will finally have the feeling of oneness.

There is a saying ‘No man is an Island’ yet an island gives you the impression that it is alone because of the water surrounding it.  But if you look below the surface of the seas you see that  islands are in fact all joined together to form our planet.   But we can live on an island of our own making and it can keep us apart and isolated from each other.  If you take water as a symbol of our emotions it is the emotions that keep us apart and isolated from truly loving others.

In my long experience with working on a one to one basis and with groups of people I have found that there is a great deal of denial connected with feelings and emotions. It does not matter how long you have worked on yourself there is always some area which is out of your view and because this is out of your view it does not come to the surface to be changed.  These issues may never be pointed out to you. Those who care and are close to you, may not have the courage, because of their insecurities, to tell you. It is easier to become indignant and angry along with you when you are telling them how upset you are about something, and so it goes on and your invisible issues stay hidden in the shadows, keeping you in the darkness and feeding your negativity. What happens when some brave soul tells you, that although they love you they dislike your behaviour and proceed to inform you of a few truths?  You most probably cross them off your Christmas card list or never speak to them again.  How many say ‘thank you’ and bless this person for putting you in touch with a part of you that you deny or don’t want to look at.

Spiritual energy is not an emotional energy.  Spirituality has no place for emotions.  It is a state of being.  Love, Joy, Compassion, Empathy, Integrity, Humility and many others are all states of being, they are not fuelled by emotions.  They are fuelled by passion.  The passion of being of true service, not being of service out of a need to be loved, liked, getting a pass into heaven etc.  We need to remember God is NOT against us.  God is FOR us, always has been and always will be.

When we work in a state of absolute honesty with our emotions, and give up the need to be right, detach from the need of approval and control, detach from expectation, judgement and blame, changes occur imperceptibly, rather like not noticing your hair is growing until it needs cutting.

Fear freezes us into believing we can be no different, whereas expressing love makes us different. It is with this understanding we realise we are being one with God and each other all the time, because with love comes oneness and unity.
